I need to do research on a cracked ferrule. and thus don't want to add more scratched by pulling it off with pliers and I can't use a lathe to strip away the ferrule.
Any *reasonable* suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

If its cracked why worry about scratching it ?? That out of the way hire a pro if it is a good stick. they are to easy to damage ,If of little value tap a knife blade gently into the crack to expand it then gently work it off the end of the stick

Witout damaging the ferrule, or the cue? I'm assuming you mean the cue since the ferrule is cracked. What I do is take a utility knife and split the ferrule. Take adhesive solvent, put a small amount in the split, and work the ferrule loose from the cue. If you try to pull the ferrule off it could damage the cue. The adhesive solvent will loosen the glue up.
