Ruth was a great hitter...and even a great pitcher. Ty Cobb, however, is hands down the best in that era.
The best player I have ever seen is Barry Bonds. Even before his roid problems he was a great 5 tool player.
Before him I would say Rickey Henderson, and as you all are laughing at the answer look over his homers, runs, and stolen bases. He did all of it as a leadoff hitter and slid head first most of the time. Rock solid.
The greatest ever? Willie Mays.

This is a good question, but it depends on the era.
Ruth was probably the best in his time, but you could say that Hank Aaron was the best, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle back in the 1950s and 1960s, you could say Mark McGwire or Sammy Sosa in the 1990s and Barry Bonds now.
It all depends on what era you are talking about.
