McDermott's a fine brand and anything in that price range is sufficient. The main difference going to higher price ranges is the fancy inlay work which is primarily aesthetic. McDermott offers a lifetime warranty (if purchased from an authorized dealer) and a maintenance program, so those are big pluses. Viking also has a lifetime warranty.
Having said that, there are some personal preferences that go in to purchasing a cue besides looks, most of which can be adjusted after purchase (like weight). It will cost a bit more to get something adjusted later, but that's a chance you have to take if you're going to try to keep it a surprise. A lot also depends on your husband's ability and how serious he is about the game. When I was really getting serious I picked up a McDermott though and have no qualms about the way it came. I don't use it much now, but if I wouldn't hesitate to pick it up if I needed a backup.

mcdermotts are good cues, they have adjustable wieght bolts, i prefer 18 - 19 oz, they have a lifetime warranty against warpage etc.. the dealers have a bit of wiggle room on price so ask them whats the best they can do, good luck

I would recommend picking only a Mcdermott, Viking, Meucci, or Lucassi. As long as it's one of those, it will be a good stick, just pick the look you like best. Good luck!!!

Hmm... I would say McDermont or Lucasi.
I have a brilliant Lucasi pure white pool cue.
